In a tape released Sunday by al-Qaida's media wing, terrorist leader Osama bin Laden said President Barack Obama is "powerless" to stop the war in Afghanistan.
SITE Intelligence Group, a terrorist-monitoring firm that translated the address, said bin Laden, whose al-Qaida organization was behind the Sept. 11 attacks, blamed the war on the "pro-Israel lobby" and corporate interests.
IntelCenter, another company that monitors terrorist propaganda, said the 11-minute video shows a still picture of bin Laden while audio of the address plays.
Bin Laden's address to the American people comes two days after the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. He typically addresses the United States in a message around the Sept. 11 anniversary.
The purpose of his address Sunday, bin Laden said in the SITE translation, is "to remind you of the causes" of Sept. 11, chiefly "your support to your Israeli allies who occupy our land of Palestine."
Bin Laden argued against the claims that the war is necessary for U.S. security, saying current White House officials are merely following the strategy of former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney to "promote the previous policies of fear to market the interests of big companies."
When Obama became president and retained many of the Bush administration's military leaders, such as Defense Secretary Robert Gates, "reasonable people knew that Obama is a powerless man who will not be able to end the war as he promised," bin Laden said.
"If you end the war, so to it," bin Laden said. "But if it is otherwise, all we will do is continue the war of attrition against you on all possible axes."

Pedro Martinez pitched eight shutout innings to lead the Phillies to a double-header sweep over the Mets.

Pedro Martinez (W, 5-0) struck out seven over eight shutout innings. He walked two and gave up six hits.

Ryan Madson (S, 8 ) struck out one in a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

In what will certainly go down as one of the best moments in 2009, Pedro Martinez dazzled the city of Philadelphia for eight strong innings to lead the Phillies past the Mets to cap a day-night sweep.
The veteran right-hander, looking to best Kyle Kendrick’s game one performance against his former team, looked like the Cy Young winner of years gone by, rather than the broken down pitcher that the Mets gave up on. After allowing a leadoff single to Luis Castillo, Pedro settled in to retire the side, and would strike out David Wright and Daniel Murphy. He would go on to retire 10 in a row until Wright’s leadoff double in the sixth inning, but he would be stranded there as the future Hall of Famer never gave the Mets much chance to get on the scoreboard.
He was provided one run of support from the offense, and frankly, that’s all he would need. He bested the New York offense over eight stellar innings, mixing in his breaking pitches with a moving fastball. His biggest moment came in the eighth, when a two-out double from Murphy appeared to end his night. After a few words on the mound with Charlie Manuel, Pedro remained in the game to finish out the inning.
It’s just another solid performance for Pedro, who is very steadily earning himself a spot on the October roster.
With this win, the Phillies move to 6.5 games ahead of the second place Florida Marlins, reducing their magic number to 14.

After a day off, the Phillies host the Washington Nationals in a three game set. In game one, Cliff Lee (6-2, 3.11) takes on Garrett Mock (3-7, 5.75).

Police: Body found inside Yale lab building
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Police in Connecticut say they found what they believe is the body of a Yale University graduate student hidden inside the wall of a building where she was last seen five days ago.
New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard says the body has not been identified as doctoral student Annie Le, who has been the focus of a massive police search since she vanished in the building on Tuesday.
Le swiped her identification card to enter the university building that morning, but there was no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex. Investigators pored over blueprints and surveillance video footage while searching for her.
Le was from Placerville, Calif. She was set to get married Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore.

State police found the body at around 5 p.m. Sunday in an area of the building that houses utility cables that run between floors.
Le was last seen Tuesday morning in the building. Surveillance video shows her arriving around 10 a.m., but police had been baffled since the investigation began because there was no video of Le leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras operating around the complex. Her ID, money, credit cards and purse were found in her office.
More than 100 local, state and federal police had been searching the building for days, using blueprints to uncover any place where evidence or Le's body could be hidden.
