Report: Chris Brown Maybe Used Eye Drops to Pay Homage to Michael Jackson
The intrepid reporters over at Us Weekly have dug up a "backstage source" from the BET Awards who says Chris Brown used eye drops to manufacture the tears during his weepy, potentially career-rehabilitating Michael Jackson tribute the other night. Apparently the source saw Brown's bodyguard hand Brown the eye drops, and then the troubled singer "rubbed it in and ... started crying." Scandalous! Brown's rep has quickly issued a denial, saying Chris "was moved by the opportunity to pay tribute to his idol," and he may have a point: If Brown had rubbed eye drops in before leaving the backstage area, wouldn't he have been visibly weeping throughout the whole performance and not just the bit at the end? WASHINGTON — The NAACP says first lady Michelle Obama will talk about her campaign against childhood obesity when she addresses the organization's annual convention in Kansas City on July 12.
Mrs. Obama launched her "Let's Move" campaign to bring attention to the U.S. childhood obesity epidemic. One in three American children are overweight or obese, putting them at risk of developing serious health conditions. The statistics are worse among black and Hispanic children.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization.

Police force tensions bring Reverend Al Sharpton to Indianapolis
Sharpton to speak about racial tensions following Brandon Johnson case
Indianapolis - Reverend Al Sharpton will speak in Indianapolis Sunday July 11th at Eastern Star Church at 5750 East 30th Street. Sharpton will speak about police brutality and focus on the case involving Brandon Johnson who suffered injuries following excessive force used by IMPD officers.
An FBI investigation into the case remains open. The Baptist Ministers Alliance organized the event to bring Sharpton to town. Sharpton is expected to talk about racial tensions surrounding the case and address concerns about IMPD within the black community.
Talk show host Amos Brown says there's one city leader in particular he feels hasn't played a necessary role in dialogue surrounding the Johnson case.
"Mayor Ballard ran his campaign saying he wanted to head up public safety but he has been conspicuously absent in this entire situation," said Brown. "It's time for the Mayor to sit down with leadership within the African-American community and work this out."
"What is he going to say that hasn't been said," said Olgen Williams, Deputy Mayor of Neighborhoods. Williams defended Ballard who he says felt it best Public Safety Director Frank Straub handle the case.
"That's his(the Mayor's) leadership style. He lets people do their job and I think public safety did a good job and met with the community."
Straub is out of town but his spokesperson said he is aware of Sharpton's visit but hasn't learned the exact schedule and has made no decision yet if he will attend.

For African-American Women, Thin May Not Be In
Many women today are dissatisfied with their weight, body shape and size, and often strive to be unrealistically thin. A University of Missouri graduate student has found that black women actually differ from white women in their perceptions of the ideal body shape and size.
Rashanta Bledman, a doctoral student in the department of educational, school and counseling psychology in MU's College of Education, examined the cultural ideals of body type for black women, changing the focus from weight and thinness to shape in order to better understand black women's perceptions of attractiveness. Previously, most research has focused primarily on middle to upper class white women and excludes African-American women.
"Historically, the ideal for women is to be thin," Bledman said. "However, I noticed that within certain communities, thinness was not the most desired shape for women."
Bledman surveyed 79 African-American women using a questionnaire designed to measure concerns about body image, weight, shape and satisfaction. Her goal was to find out how satisfied African-American women are with their bodies, what the ideal shape is for black women, and whether there is a discrepancy between the ideal and the actual shapes of these women.
The study found that black women are satisfied in general with their bodies but still have certain areas they would like to improve, specifically their mid and lower torsos. Additionally, Bledman found that shape is more important than weight in the African-American community, as most participants believed the most attractive body shape for them was slightly overweight compared to Body Mass Index (BMI) standards.
"Many women of color that I talked to wanted to look a certain way that is difficult to obtain," Bledman said. "Within their communities, having a curvy body type is preferable to being really thin or really heavy."
Bledman won the American Psychological Association Graduate Student Award for her research. The award, given to a black woman graduate student in psychology, is determined by the student's creativity, innovation and the degree to which their research furthers understanding of the role of gender in black women's lives.
"The award validates my passion for helping women of color," Bledman said. "I'm happy that the APA feels that my research is important enough to share with others."

Shakur song Dear Mama, Cosby's comedy album I Started Out As A Child and REM's 1981 song Radio Free Europe will enter the National Recording Registry.
Records by Little Richard, Patti Smith and Willie Nelson are also included.
Each year, 25 works nominated by the public and a panel of experts are preserved for future generations.
Shakur's 1995 song Dear Mama was cited as a "moving and eloquent homage to both his own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference".
Shakur, who was shot dead in 1996, becomes the third rap act to be inducted into the registry, following Grandmaster Flash and Public Enemy.

CLEVELAND — The New Jersey Nets are on the clock in their courtship of LeBron James.
Nets billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov and rap mogul Jay-Z are in Cleveland to make their pitch to the two-time MVP, who became the most celebrated free agent in history at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
Prokhorov, who intends to give James a global pitch during New Jersey’s expected two-hour presentation, was accompanied by new Nets coach Avery Johnson and club president Rod Thorn. Jay-Z is a part owner of the Nets and a longtime friend of James.
After landing at Hopkins International Airport at 10:36 a.m. the Nets’ contingent made the short drive to Cleveland to meet with James at the office of his business manager, Maverick Carter. James arrived about eight minutes before New Jersey’s delegation.
James was driven from his home in Akron in a white SUV and was quickly escorted through a side door at the IMG Building, where dozens of reporters and photographers were waiting. Wearing a gray Nike T-shirt and sunglasses, he made a brief stop in the lobby before heading up to Suite 823, the headquarters of LRMR Marketing, the company James began with Carter and two other longtime friends.
When Jay-Z strolled through the lobby, several customers in a cafe adjacent to the lobby applauded and yelled his name.
The Nets will be followed by the cross-river rival New York Knicks, who will attempt to sway James into leaving home for the league’s largest market. New York’s group will include owner James Dolan, president Donnie Walsh, coach Mike D’Antoni and former Knicks guard Allan Houston.
The Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls are expected to meet with James on Friday, with the Cavaliers scheduled to visit with him Saturday.
Cleveland’s hoping that James’ loyalty to home will keep him in Ohio. The team gave him something to consider as free agency opened by offering Byron Scott their coaching job. Scott’s agent, Brian McInerney, told the AP that Scott has accepted the position.
James is not believed to have played any role in Scott’s hiring, which ended a drawn-out search by the Cavs. However, Scott’s background as a 14-year player and 10-year head coach in the league is certainly appealing to James. Scott took the Nets to the finals twice and built a strong relationship with New Orleans star guard Chris Paul, who is one of James’ closest friends.

Most disgusting reason for plane to return to gate: Maggots found on US Airways flight
We are used to overstuffed luggage falling from overhead compartments, but maggots? They fell from the overhead bin due to a spoiled container of meat (left behind by a passenger on the previous flight, according to US Airways). As the plane was taxiing, passenger Donna Adamo told AP, “I heard the word ‘maggot’ and that kind of got everybody creeped out. All of a sudden, I felt somebody flick the back of my hair and on the front of me came a maggot, which I flicked off me.”
At the gate, the plane was cleaned and fumigated before the passengers were brought back on board.

UGA Athletic Director Damon Evans to discuss DUI charge
University Athletic Director Damon Evans will meet with the media at 6:30 p.m. today on campus to discuss his DUI arrest late Wednesday in Atlanta.
University President Michael Adams will issue a written statement following the news conference.
Evans was pulled over in his 2009 BMW shortly before midnight Wednesday and a field sobriety test was performed. He was taken to jail and released early Thursday, charged with DUI and driving in an improper lane.
WSB-TV has reported a passenger in Evans’ car, 28-year-old Courtney Furhrmann, of Atlanta, was arrested for disorderly conduct.
“The trooper made the traffic stop after observing the manner he was driving,” Gordy Wright, a state patrol spokesman, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He got him stopped, detected an odor of alcohol, administered field sobriety tests and determined he was less safe to be driving.”
Earlier Thursday, coaches and senior staff attended a meeting in Evans’ office at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall at 1:20 p.m.
WSB-TV in Atlanta reported Fulton County Sheriff’s Office officials said Evans spent the night in Atlanta City Jail. Evans refused to take a breath test.
Earlier this year Evans was awarded a sizable pay raise, as the athletic association voted unanimously to grant him a contract extension and boost his pay to $550,000. Each year for the next five years he will get an automatic $20,000 raise, which will give him a salary of $630,000 by 2014. He will receive a $250,000 longevity bonus if he remains in the job when the contract expires in 2015. The start of his new contract begins today, as his pay increased $110,000 on July 1, the start of the new fiscal year.
University students were talking about the arrest on campus today.
“I think it’s pretty ironic since they show that anti-DUI video with him in it on the JumboTron at every football game,” said rising senior David McHugh. “I am very disappointed that our athletic director would do something that he tells the students not to do at every football game. I think it sheds a very bad light on our University, and I think he should be punished for his actions.”
“My first reaction was, ‘Really?’, because the person who told me about it is someone I go to football games with, and my friend told me the main thing Evans said at football games was ‘Don’t drink and drive, because if you drink and drive, you lose.’ And that’s why this is so shocking,” said Azubuike Ekwueme, a rising junior who works at the Tate Student Center Information Desk. “Someone as big as he is, with the title he has should be more of a role model to others. It would make him a better role model if this wouldn’t have happened. At the same time, he’s human, and it happens. But for those that it happens to, knowing you’re a celebrity for the most part, you’ve gotta watch the things you do, when you do them, because you’re looked at more (closely) than others are.”
Under the policy set forth by the Georgia Athletic Department, a student-athlete found in violation of the University’s alcohol policy is automatically suspended for 10 percent of the team’s games.
Evans took over as athletic director in 2004, replacing longtime athletic director and football coach Vince Dooley.

St. Louis, Mo.— The Democratic National Committee (DNC) today announced via a blog posting that St. Louis is one of four finalists bidding to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. The city last hosted a national convention in 1916, re-nominating President Woodrow Wilson.
St. Louis submitted its bid on 21 May, along with several other cities. St. Louis is a strong contender for the Convention, given the region’s central location and unique attributes as a family-friendly and diverse city capable of hosting the 50,000 delegates, press and other visitors in 2012.
If successful, St. Louis will enjoy a significant economic benefit from the Convention. In 2008, the Convention boosted Denver's regional economy by $266 million. For comparison, the 2009 MLB All-Star Game boosted the St. Louis economy by some $60 million.

Did Gore sexually assault Portland massage therapist? Police re-open case

Portland police said Wednesday that they will reopen and investigate a massage therapist’s allegations that former Vice President Al Gore sexually assaulted her at a downtown hotel in October 2006.
The new stance came as therapist Molly Hagerty went public, telling the National Enquirer in its latest edition that she’s demanding a full police investigation of her complaint.
Records that police released last week revealed that Portland sex assault investigators took a detailed statement from Hagerty in January 2009 but never investigated it and closed the case, citing “insufficient evidence.”
Police said last week that they considered the case closed unless new evidence surfaced. Police said earlier Wednesday that Hagerty had not contacted them, and they did not explain their decision later in the day to reopen the case.
“Consistent with our policy regarding open investigations, the Police Bureau will not be commenting on any additional specifics regarding this case at this time,” police spokeswoman Detective Mary Wheat said in a prepared statement.
A Gore family spokeswoman disputed Hagerty’s allegations.

A few days ago, Hannity played a short clip from a tape of her statement to the police. I got a little sick just listening to it. Seriously. Of course, part of the reason is that it makes me sick to think that a man could do that to a woman, but the other reason is because I do NOT want to picture Al Gore in any type of sexual situation. Oh, and the Portland Tribune’s “rationale” for sitting on this story back when the incident allegedly happened? Unacceptable.

Portland police said Wednesday that they will reopen and investigate a massage therapist’s allegations that former Vice President Al Gore sexually assaulted her at a downtown hotel in October 2006.
The new stance came as therapist Molly Hagerty went public, telling the National Enquirer in its latest edition that she’s demanding a full police investigation of her complaint.
Records that police released last week revealed that Portland sex assault investigators took a detailed statement from Hagerty in January 2009 but never investigated it and closed the case, citing “insufficient evidence.”
Police said last week that they considered the case closed unless new evidence surfaced. Police said earlier Wednesday that Hagerty had not contacted them, and they did not explain their decision later in the day to reopen the case.
“Consistent with our policy regarding open investigations, the Police Bureau will not be commenting on any additional specifics regarding this case at this time,” police spokeswoman Detective Mary Wheat said in a prepared statement.
A Gore family spokeswoman disputed Hagerty’s allegations.

A few days ago, Hannity played a short clip from a tape of her statement to the police. I got a little sick just listening to it. Seriously. Of course, part of the reason is that it makes me sick to think that a man could do that to a woman, but the other reason is because I do NOT want to picture Al Gore in any type of sexual situation. Not only that, but I don’t wan’t to believe that this is true. I can’t stand Gore as it is.
