Considering the corruption charges
aimed at Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti Foundation, this next piece of news
may come as a surprise: The singer is apparently considering a bid to
run for president of the country, which would follow on from his
appointment as ambassador-at-large for Haiti in 2007.
Current president President René Préval cannot
seek re-election as the race to enter the 2010 presidential contest
begins, and the focus on the contest is sure to be huge following the
devastation wreaked upon Haiti during the earthquake last year. A vague
statement issued by Jean’s family reads as follows:
"Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth
is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of
whether he is part of the government moving forward ... If and when a
decision is made, media will be alerted immediately." Jean had
previously claimed he was set to encourage the youth vote in Haiti
during the upcoming election, but it appears his ambition may have
taken a sizable leap since then.
