Abbott Labs just announced that they are recalling certain Similac brand powder infant formulas in Guam, Puerto Rico, the USA and some parts of the Caribbean due to a “remote” possibility that it is contaminated by a common beetle. The risk was discovered when the presence of the insects in formula from one production area in a single manufacturing facility was unearthed during an internal quality review. Read on for details of the recall.

Luckily, the FDA says that the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk. But if you do notice that your baby does not want to eat, it could be because of gastrointestinal discomfort caused by the contaminated formula. If your baby has ingested Similac recently and has stomach pains or discomfort that lasts for more than a few days, Abbott and the FDA advise that you should see a doctor.

Not all Similac formulas were potentially affected, so check your containers carefully. The products that are being recalled are: certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers and certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. Liquid Similac is not believed to have been affected and is not part of the recall.

If you would like to inquire about the recall further, you can call the company at 800-986-8850.
