While Chatham County District Attorney Larry Chisolm has had to deal
with extensive turnover and the departure of key veterans since he took
office, his hiring and management practices also have led to charges of
sexual harassment and racial and gender discrimination among his
support personnel.
The allegations have come from short-term employees hired after Chisolm
took office – recruited in at least one instance by Chisolm himself –
as well as hold-overs from his predecessor, Spencer Lawton Jr.
One federal court lawsuit has been filed against Chisolm and Chatham
County accusing him of age and gender discrimination, and at least two
more are threatened.
The new employment issues ensnaring Chisolm’s office have come as he
has weathered a series of resignations and retirements involving at
least five key staff members, beginning with the April departure of
veteran assistant prosecutor Greg McConnell.
Subsequently, chief assistant Margaret “Meg” Heap resigned, and Helen
Bradley, long-term director of the Victim-Witness Assistance Program,
retired.
