ALG Praises Boehner's Call to Defund Public Broadcasting

October 22nd, 2010, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government today praised House Republican Leader John Boehner for calling for an end to taxpayer funding of public broadcasting in the wake of National Public Radio (NPR) firing news analyst Juan Williams.

In an interview with National Review Online, Boehner said, “Washington is borrowing 37 cents of every dollar it spends from our kids and grandkids. Given that, I think it’s reasonable to ask why Congress is spending taxpayers’ money to support a left-wing radio network — and in the wake of Juan Williams’ firing, it’s clearer than ever that’s what NPR is.”

“We need to face facts — our government is broke,” Boehner added.

With a $13.6 trillion national debt, and the Obama Administration proposing to raise it by approximately $1.06 trillion every year for the next ten years, ALG’s Wilson is emphatic about getting the nation’s balance sheet in order. He believes public broadcasting is the right place to start.

“If Congress cannot cut public broadcasting when we must balance the budget, it cannot cut anything,” Wilson said, adding, “John Boehner is right. We are broke. The real reason behind QE2 is that the Treasury could be facing approximately a $630 billion shortfall in treasuries auctions every year for the next three years. If we can barely pay the bills as is, why are we borrowing and printing money to pay for luxuries like public broadcasting?”

Wilson called for “an immediate end to funding for public broadcasting that has not already been disbursed” and renewed his call for members of Congress to cosponsor legislation by Representative Doug Lamborn that would defund it permanently. Currently, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting receives about $420 million annually from taxpayers in the federal budget.

Wilson said that the Juan Williams firing “reveals the real, radical agenda behind public broadcasting,” adding, “Williams’ discriminatory firing is a perfect, perhaps prime reason why there shouldn't even be public broadcasting. The government has demonstrated time and again that it is an intolerant force with no ability nor willingness to respect alternative viewpoints.” Wilson noted that Williams was fired “merely for expressing his opinions.”

In an interview with FOX News’ Bill O’Reilly, Williams said “when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they're identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

Wilson noted that Williams “is entitled to his honest opinion. In the same interview, his broader point was that you had to distinguish between Muslims of faith and terrorists killing in the name of religion. He was explaining in an honest way his own personal struggle to overcome fear in the wake of the 9/11 attacks to make that point. For that, he was fired.”

“Williams was not even on NPR when he said it. How could he violate their so-called ‘editorial guidelines’?” Wilson added. Writing for FOXNews.com, Williams called it “a chilling assault on free speech. The critical importance of honest journalism and a free flowing, respectful national conversation needs to be had in our country. But it is being buried as collateral damage in a war whose battles include political correctness and ideological orthodoxy.”

Williams added, “I say an ideological battle because my comments on ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ are being distorted by the self-righteous ideological, left-wing leadership at NPR.”

“NPR has engaged in blatant viewpoint discrimination,” Wilson explained. “They are more like a limited public forum than an agency with strict communications guidelines for who can speak for the agency, because they are a public broadcaster. They are obligated under the First Amendment to allow and tolerate alternative viewpoints. They cannot fire somebody simply over a matter of personal opinion.”
Wilson said that Williams “could sue under the First Amendment for discriminating on the basis of his viewpoint, but that may be besides the point.”

Wilson concluded, “This is censorship of the first order by a public agency. Given their track record, I’m not even going to pretend that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting could ever be reformed to be viewpoint neutral. They are a radical, ideological propaganda unit, and Congress has a responsibility to cut off their funding. They are discriminating against honest journalists, and taxpayers should not be compelled to finance its ideological, one-sided political agenda. Besides, we cannot afford it.”

The Lies of Obamacare

Yet more evidence is emerging that Obamacare is a lie, a complete fraud perpetrated on the American people. Prior to congressional enactment of the legislation, Barack Obama promised in his State of the Union Address that it would “reduce costs and premiums for millions of families and businesses.”

Now we know that’s a lie. Not only are insurance companies already warning of higher premiums because of Obamacare, now the Department of Justice (DOJ) is preparing to sue Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan because, get this, premiums are too low.

Specifically, because the insurer negotiates with hospitals and other health care providers for the lowest possible rates for its customers, Obama’s DOJ is arguing that that is increasing the costs for everyone else. Never mind that Blue Cross covers 2.4 million people in Michigan, or about 27.7 percent of those with insurance in the state.

Those 2.4 million people just are not paying enough, according to Obama.

Fannie, Freddie Bailouts Could Total $363 Billion

The total taxpayer tab for the government bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could total $363 billion under a worst-case scenario, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). That scenario assumes further declines in housing prices, which many analysts are already predicting.

It could even be worse than that, however.
Right now, the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) that helped cause the housing bubble in 2000’s and the financial crisis that followed with loose lending standards have an unlimited credit line from the U.S. Treasury. The bailouts have already cost $148 billion, and although the unlimited credit line expires at the end of 2012, after that the companies will be entitled to another $275 billion, according to former chief credit officer of Fannie Mae Edward Pinto.

Jealous jaggle headed heffa tampered with love rivals parachute..going to jail for 30years.

BRUSSELS –  A jealous schoolteacher who doctored the parachute of a love rival causing her to plunge to her death was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday.

In sentencing Els Clottemans, 26, the judge said the only mitigating circumstance in the 2006 skydive murder was her feeble psychological condition. Clottemans attempted suicide in 2008.
She was sentenced a day after she was found guilty of murdering Els Van Doren by sabotaging her parachute so neither it nor a safety chute would open during a Nov. 18, 2006, jump.
A jury at a courthouse in the East Belgian town of Tongeren agreed with the prosecution that jealousy motivated Clottemans.

She and Van Doren were members of the same parachute club. The killer and her victim were intimately involved with the same a man, a Dutch skydiver, whom Clottemans wanted for herself.

The jury said Clottemans acted with premeditation and that, as an accomplished jumper, she knew very well how to disable a parachute. Evidence at the trial showed she sent anonymous letters about Van Doren’s love life to mutual friends and that she was psychologically unstable. Clottemans faced a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Her trial opened Sept. 24 with the accused sitting nervously near the mud-caked parachute bag and helmet that Van Doren wore on the day she died.

The jury saw video footage from a camera mounted on her helmet, that Van Doren had shot during what would be her last jump.

She and Clottemans were among the last four jumpers to leave the Cessna plane.
The video showed how the victim looked up, yanking at her gear, hoping to see an open canopy above her.

Neither parachute opened and she crashed into a garden in the East Belgian town of Opglabbeek and died instantly.

City and union agree to postpone teacher rating release

City and union lawyers agreed in court today to postpone releasing individual teacher’s effectiveness scores until legal hearings are held next month.

In a meeting held with Judge Cynthia S. Kern in a Manhattan court this afternoon, city and union lawyers agreed to schedule a hearing on November 24 on whether the city should release the ratings with teachers’ names included. The teachers union sued the city to stop the release of the performance scores, arguing that releasing teachers’ names would violate their privacy and that the ratings are not yet complete and thus exempt from freedom of information laws.

In the meantime, the city has agreed not to release teachers’ names, but may give reporters more limited information, including possibly the data with the names redacted.

“Names you will not see until the 24th, that I can promise you,” said Charles Moerdler, a lawyer for the United Federation of Teachers.

The lawyer representing the city, Assistant Corporation Counsel Jesse Levine, said that the two parties would meet tomorrow to negotiate what, if any, information could be released before the November hearing.
“We’ll know tomorrow whether something will be released imminently or if there will be further discussion,” Levine said.


The city had previously said that it intended to release a list of individual teachers’ names tomorrow unless the court ordered it not to do so. Levine said that today’s agreement gives both sides the opportunity to fully flesh out their legal arguments.

“We think that it’s better for the city to do it this way rather than to have an order,” Levine said.
Under the agreement, which is binding under the judge’s order, the city has until November 12 to file a brief arguing that it is legal to release the list of names. The union will then have 10 days to file its reply.

Lots of Takers: On a crater bashed, its water splashed, polar moon base dreams rehashed.

On October 9 last year a flood of news reports told of a great public disappointment in, or on, the Moon. The US LCROSS probe, as it pummeled a dark, exceedingly cold crater near the Moon’s south pole, failed to make a big and literally flashy explosion when its spent-booster-stage impacter rammed home, followed by the heavily-instrumented probe itself. Millions of people put binoculars on the spot, and nothin’. Put LCROSS on this site’s search space and see the initial progression of news last year, from giddy hopes to visible dud and on to first reports that it was a science success anyway as H2O and more lofted miles above the surface. Naked eyes saw nothing but LCROSS’s instruments got plenty.

Today’s cover story at Science comprises the main fruits of data analysis so far. Half a dozen technical reports by scores of authors say not only is there reasonably abundant ice in permanently-shadowed polar recesses where the sun never rises above surrounding heights, but other minerals as well. In Grist at the bottom of this post are press releases, including one from NASA proclaiming “NASA Missions Uncover the Moon’s Buried Treasures.” The ice, it says, appears to be there in near-pure grains, maybe whole shoals. There are other gases frozen to the regolith, including methane – a potential fuel.
It’s hard to quarrel with buried-treasure as news angle. It’s catchy, not too simplistically inaccurate, and its stirs conversation and longing. A NASA teleconference made things easier for reporters to scarf up quotes that they could hear for themselves.

At the Washington Post, to take one example, Marc Kaufman writes hyperbolically but permissibly enough for daily journalism, “Gazing at the moon will just never be the same.” Not only water to drink but fuel for lunar rockets and “a cache of familiar compounds” including methane, ammonia, mercury, and traces of sulfur and silver. Right off the bat, he has one mission scientist exulting over “a treasure chest of elements.”

For the first time since right after Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley opened up to Oprah Winfrey about his tragic passing.

She said her appearance wasn’t about promoting anything and went on to say that their marriage was real. She recalled being informed of his passing by John Travolta. She said, “I was crying all day.” She said she didn’t know why, and then she got word from John that Michael had died. She said, “Actually, John Travolta was one of the first texts I got, asking, ‘Are you alright?’”

Of her reaction to his death, she said, “Real honest to goodness shock. I was floored. Honestly floored.” She spoke of their marriage, saying, “In every sense it was a normal marriage. He was like a little gnome. Because it was hard for him to sleep. I’d hear him piddling. It was a bit endearing and I didn’t mind it. But he did have a hard time sleeping, yes.” She continued, “I loved taking care of him. It was the highest point of my life. He was like a drug for me. I always wanted to be around him. I never felt like that feeling with another human except for one - my father.” “One of the very highest points of my life was when things were going really well and he and I were united together and he and I had an understanding about some of the people and things that could go on around him and he was with me on those things and we were a unit and I could take care of him,” she told Oprah. “For some reason, I don’t know what happens when someone passes away and this is what’s come of it. But I’ve come to have all this love again and understanding for him. I don’t know why it had to take all that to have this happen. That upsets me a bit,” Presley opined.

Crocodile on plane kills 19 passengers after stampede

20 people (19 passengers and crew members and 1 British pilot) are dead after a crocodile escaped from a stowaway compartment on a small plane, causing the plane to crash.


The owner of the crocodile reportedly had plans to sell it and had packed it in a sportsbag before boarding the plane.

The squirmy little croc freed itself from the bag (and the stowaway compartment) and started running away rampantly causing complete chaos on board. Eventually, the plane crashed due to an unbalanced load, leaving only one survivor and 20 people dead.

The crocodile also managed to survive the wreck but did not make it through the aftermath. The frantic animal was killed with a machete by rescuers who were sifting through the debris from the wreckage.
Jeune Afrique recounted what he heard from the sole survivor and had the following to say in a report about the unfortunate incident:

“One of the passengers had hidden the animal, which he planned to sell, in a big sports bag, from which the reptile escaped as the plane began its descent into Bandundu. The terrified air hostess hurried towards the cockpit, followed by the passengers. The plane was then sent off-balance despite the desperate efforts of the pilot. The crocodile survived the crash before being cut up with a machete.”

We’re sure this will have many animal activists up in arm. After all, it wasn’t the crocodile’s fault its owner was an idiot.

Marvel Takes Over ESPN Magazine

All I'm wondering now is... who's got the best ups out of Iron Man, Thor and Cap?

I suppose this means that a truce has finally been reached in the decades-long conflict between jocks and fanboys. Marvel’s going  to be taking ESPN THE MAGAZINE over for the special NBA Preview that’s hitting stands tomorrow. Leinil Yu, J. Scott Campbell, Olivier Coipel and a lot of other artists have contributed to what could be best described as a “strike files” for the next season of NBA. Basically, all 30 teams are getting individual pin-ups that’ll mash them together with Marvel characters and classic covers. If you’re an ESPN insider, you can already check out most of the images on their site but, even if you aren’t, we still have a couple pics from this extra-special magazine. The one to right is sort-of a one-off What If…? from Joe Quesada. What if Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James founded the Avengers? Below, Greg Horn puts the 2010/2011 Miami Heat line-up into a composition that I really want to say is a homage to some classic X-MEN cover.

What’s brought about this titanic team-up? Corporate synergy. It turns out Disney also owns ESPN so, following the big acquisition this year, that makes Marvel its sister and this their first playdate as siblings.

If I were an NBA fan, I think both hemispheres of my mind would be erupting in an out-of-control electrical storm right now. Alas, while I love to shoot hoops and play pick-up games every weekend, I’ve never gotten into watching this stuff. Seriously, I have no favorite team. Well, maybe the Toronto Raptors because their mascot is rad. 


I do still think it’s quite cool that so many great artists’ work is going to be on display for a whole new audience to appreciate. Who knows? Maybe this could be the start of annual tradition, or even a regular partnership for the NHL, NFL and MLB previews. 

Or maybe it means that Nate Robinson will be the next guest in DEADPOOL TEAM-UP?

Lebrone James tells angry Cavaliers fans to 'get over it'

If LeBron James was a Cleveland Cavaliers’ fan living in Akron, Ohio, he wouldn’t have liked himself either; he told the Associated Press today.

James said he understands why Cavs’ fans continue to become angry at him, but he says that they need to move on and get over it. Since the Decision, James’ popularity has dropped significantly.

“If I was a fan and I was on the outside looking in, I could be upset a little bit if one of my favorite players left,” James said. “Or if I felt like he betrayed us or whatever the case may be. But you have to get over it.”
James then tweeted this after, “Let’s clear this up! I never said to the Cavs fans to ‘get over it.’ I’ve never and will never say anything bad about them. 7 years of joy!”

James understands all the negativity he has received lately in these last few months. But LeBron is not ready to apologize.

“Sports are very emotional and fans are very emotional,” James said. “At times they really believe you may be related to them you and you sleep in their house. When you do something wrong and you leave their house they can become very emotional. I’ve understood that over the years. But at the same time, you have to understand you have to do what is best yourself.”

NBA commish David Stern: League wants to reduce player salary costs nearly 35%

The NBA wants to reduce player salary costs by $750 million-$800 million, or nearly 35%, NBA Commissioner David Stern told news reporters Thursday.
"Well, what we told our players initially is there's a swing," Stern said after two days of meetings with club owners. "We would like to get profitable, have a return on investment. There's a swing of somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 to $800 million that we would like to change. That's our story, and we're sticking with it."

Poll-itics: CA voters oppose measure to legalize marijuana, 51%-39%

California is dazed and confused:

Prop. 19 would legalize marijuana in California. But the Los Angeles Times/USC Poll found that voters oppose the measure 51% to 39%. The poll found that the measure is far behind in Southern California.

Proponents don’t have enough cash to run ads in favor of toke-itude, and they have the burden of trying to convince Californians that legalizing weed is okay.

Top candidates for statewide office have opposed the measure. As the Times/USC poll was being conducted last week, U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric Holder announced that the Obama administration would “vigorously enforce” federal narcotics laws, even if the measure passes, and “is considering all available legal and policy options.” [...]

The measure, which needs a majority vote to pass, would allow Californians who are at least 21 to grow up to 25 square feet of marijuana and possess up to an ounce. Cities and counties could authorize commercial cultivation and sales, and could impose taxes. [...]

Opponents note that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger already has signed a law making possession of an ounce an infraction.

Tab for Fannie, Freddie could soar to $363 BILLION!

The government spelled out Thursday just how much the most expensive rescue of the financial crisis will end up costing taxpayers — as much as $259 billion for mortgage buyers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

That figure would be nearly twice the amount Fannie and Freddie have received so far.

And that increased by more than $100 billion by the afternoon. And it all makes the bailouts that people hate seem like a drop in the well (Rasmussen: Most Voters Oppose the Reelection of Anyone Who Voted for the Health Care Law, Auto Bailouts, Stimulus Plan).

Fannie and Freddie's rescue has cost $135 billion so far. Their bailout could end up costing taxpayers between $142 billion and $259 billion through 2013, the Federal Housing Finance Agency projected. Those figures take into account dividends that the agency estimates the two companies will end up repaying.
