The
former boss of HP, Mark Hurd has returned to the business world as the president of HP's rival Oracle.
According to the reports Mark
Hurd will join Oracles as its president and a member of the board. He
has submitted every necessary document before the chief executive of
Oracle. Mark will replace Charles Philips as the president and as a
member of the board for Oracle.
The chief executive of Oracle, Larry Ellison has said Mark has done a
really good job at HP and our company is expecting him to so here. Mark
Hurd was forced to resign from the HP by the board of HP as the company
lost more than 10 billion dollars from it market value during his
period.
But Larry Ellison has said that Mark had nothing to do in that loss
and it was a stupid move taken by HP just like Apple board had taken the
decision of firing Steve Jobs
many years before.
Mr. Hurd resigned from HP on 6th of August and also faced an
allegation of sexual harassment from the former contractor of HP, Jodie
Fisher.

John Lennon’s Killer Mark David Chapman Denied Parole
Mark David Chapman, who shot and killed John Lennon nearly 30 years ago, was denied parole for a sixth time on Tuesday.
He was rejected by a three-member parole panel whom he met via video conference at Attica Correctional Facility.
Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, has repeatedly expressed her wish that Chapman remain in prison. Her husband’s killer, who first came up for parole in 2000, can try again in 2012.
Chapman murdered the music icon outside the Dakota apartment building on New York’s Upper West Side on December 8, 1980.
Lennon would have turned 70 next month.
Rihanna announces Loud new song, “Only Girl (In the World)”

How’s this for a productive morning? In the last two hours, Rihanna has not only announced details of a brand new album, but also dropped a brand new song. And you thought we were busy.
Just one year after releasing Rated R, the Grammy Award winning musician will return on November 2nd with Loud. The record will be proceed by the release of single number one “Only Girl (In the World)”, which was debuted earlier this morning on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.
“I’m done recording the whole album,” Rihanna revealed on her official fansite Rihanna Daily (via MTV). “I made sure not to let you down with my music! You guys are always defending me, so now you’ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn’t want to go backward and remake [2007's] Good Girl Gone Bad. I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna, and it’s perfect for us.”
That next evolution, at least per an initial listen of “Only Girl (In the World)”, is a electro-heavy departure from the material included on Rated R. Norwegian production team Stargate, which previously collaborated with Rihanna for “Don’t Stop The Music” and “Hate That I Love You”, produced the track, and you can stream it below: Only Girl (In the World) by popboi

Wyclef Jean: “Sean Penn Sniffs Cocaine” [VIDEO]
Wyclef Jean slammed Sean Penn while performing in concert this weekend, calling Penn a cocaine sniffer.
Wyclef, who has showed interest in running for Haitian President, has been denied the opportunity by the Haitian government due to residency requirements not being met.During the concert this weekend, as he sang his song, If I Were The President, Wyclef Jean added the lyrics: “I got a message for Sean Penn . . . Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine.”
Who knows if Sean Penn actually DOES cocaine, I think Wyclef was just taking a low blow (heh) at his rival. How will Sean Penn respond to this? Probably with a left hook. Sean usually doesn’t respond to attacks very well, so I’m sure this won’t be the end of this lover’s quarrel.
Personally I think Wyclef just made an ass out of himself. It’s a good thing he doesn’t have a shot at running for President – but he would make a good crooked politician. Embezzlement, anyone?

General David Petraeus Should Leave The First Amendment Alone
Afghan protesters step on a U.S. flag during a demonstration against
the United States, in Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, Sept. 6, 2010.
Hundreds of Afghans railed against the U.S. and called for President
Barack Obama’s death at a rally in the capital Monday to denounce an
American church’s plans to burn the Islamic holy book on 9/11.
I mean there were world-wide protests and loss of lives because of
radical Islam’s insistence that there not be any criticism of Mohammed
or his image depiction.
General David Petraeus is probably right
about the burning of the Koran stirring up the radical Islamic
community. And, I do not advocate this type of behavior in the least.
The church would be best NOT to do this.
But, military commanders advising Americans on their First Amendment rights is troubling to me – deeply troubling and is unacceptable. General Petraeus is in Afghanistan to fight for American freedoms and support the United States Constitution not to subvert them.
Next, will the General say that I am endangering Americans for printing this cartoon of Mohammed?
The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a small Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.
Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.
“It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort,” Gen. Petraeus said in an interview. “It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.”
Hundreds of Afghans attended a demonstration in Kabul on Monday to protest the plans of Florida pastor Terry Jones, who has said he will burn copies of Islam’s holy book to mark the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Afghan protesters chanted “death to America,” and speakers called on the U.S. to withdraw its troops. Some protesters threw rocks at a passing military convoy. So, I agree with John.
But, you see, the United States Constitution guarantees my right to publish this cartoon and to discuss it. No military general and certainly no politician or government authority can take away this right.
The Afghanistan War has not been going well and President Obama has been struggling with its mission. Hence, General Petraeus has been sent to essentially clean up the mess.
I would recommend that General Petraeus concentrate less on narrowing American’s rights and more on finding and neutralizing radical Islamic terrorists that wish me, my family, my fellow Americans and American troops harm.
Russian PM Putin Hints He May Run For The Presidency In 2012
Putin, Citing Roosevelt, Hints At A 3rd-Term Bid -- New York Times
MOSCOW — For months, Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin has done nothing to dampen speculation that he is seriously considering a bid to return to the presidency in the 2012 election. On Monday night, he offered another hint at his plans by referring to the political career of a former president of a different country: Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Mr. Putin, asked whether he would damage Russia’s political system if he chose to run again, noted that Roosevelt was elected four times in the United States because at the time, it was allowed under the Constitution.

Poll: Obama’s Approval Ratings Hit New Low
Happy
Tuesday after Labor Day, or what is now known as the official start of
the midterm election season (to be differentiated by the months leading
up to today by….pretty much nothing but a change in temperature).
Nevertheless, a new ABC/WaPo poll
out today will likely set the tone for much of the coverage over the
next few weeks, and it doesn’t look pretty for the Dems, or President Obama for that matter.
Two results particularly stand out: the GOP has a “record lead” over the Dems, and Obama’s approval rating has dipped to a new low. From ABC’s analysis of the results:
Two months before the 2010 midterm elections, likely voters now favor the Republican over the Democratic candidate in their congressional district by 53-40 percent, the widest GOP margin on record in ABC News/Washington Post polls since 1981.It’s just as bad for the President:
A majority, 52 percent, now disapproves of the way Obama is handling his job overall, another first in ABC/Post polls. Intensity increasingly is against him, with those who disapprove “strongly” outnumbering strong approvers by 14 points. A record 57 percent rate him negatively on handling the economy, “strongly” so by an even wider margin, 2-1.It’s about the economy stupid?
Ninety-two percent of Americans say the economy’s in bad shape. A mere 24 percent believe it’s improving. And for the first time numerically more say Obama’s economic program has made the economy worse, 33 percent, than improved it, 30 percent. Views that he’s helped the economy have dropped by 9 points since spring.
Obama is pulling down the shades on union financial disclosure
By Don Todd
As published by the Washington Examiner.
Should a union officer be able to keep his full compensation from the union treasury secret from the members?
Should a union officer be able to accept personal payments from businesses the union has dealings with and then keep such dealings confidential?
Most would think the answer to these questions is an obvious “no.”
Union management does not agree and they are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars from their members’ dues to prevent any such reporting and disclosure.
The reason I know this is that I spent eight years at the U.S. Department of Labor attempting to get unions to comply with such reporting requirements and they fought us every step on the way.
With the arrival of President Obama, all such requirements are being rolled back or the Labor Department is refusing to enforce them until such a time as they can be rolled back.

Industry Perspectives on the Summer of Economic Improvement
By Rebekah Rast
President Obama’s Summer Economic Stimulus Recovery plan has failed.
The national unemployment rate increased to 9.6 percent in August. The private sector is fed up with Obama’s big government tactics.
“The private sector has uniformly rejected Obama’s economic policies,” says Bill Wilson, president of Americans for Limited Government (ALG). “Big government policies have done nothing but crush job creation and hurt the free market.”
ALG collected comments from job-producing organizations in the private sector. Here is what some of them have to say about the increased unemployment rate.
Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council)
SBE Council is one of the most powerful and effective advocacy organizations dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship. The organization works to protect the interests of small businesses.
Raymond Keating, SBE Council’s chief economist, says that after reviewing the most recent unemployment report it clearly shows that “private firms don’t have incentives to go out there and create more jobs.” He went on to say that the “policy climate makes it very difficult for investors, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to jump into the employment pool. All small businesses see right now are increased costs.”

The Effects of Recovery Summer and Stimulus: Week in Review
By Adam Bitely
Over the past week at NetRightDaily.com we have reviewed Ohio, South Carolina, Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin in our continuing series investigating what effects the Recovery Act and the “Summer of Recovery” have had on the states. These five states alone show a different picture than the Obama administration would lead us to believe.
To see the large discrepancy that continues to develop between the Obama administration’s “recovery” myths and the reality of the high unemployment situations that the states are facing, just look at a state like Illinois — the home state of Obama.
Illinois received nearly $8.5 billion in “stimulus” money according to Recovery.gov. Next door in Missouri, they received nearly $4.3 billion in “stimulus” funding. One would expect that job creation in Illinois would have been nearly twice as much, given that there was twice as much “stimulus” money spent. But the government’s own data shows a different result. With nearly twice the amount of “stimulus” money, Illinois created only 2,000 more jobs than Missouri — a pitiful amount when you consider the amount of money spent.
Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end there.

ABC News Chief David Westin Resigns
David Westin is resigning from his position as president of ABC News, which he's held since 1997, apparently because of a "long-running conflict... over the financial standing of the news division." Of course! Want to read his resignation note?
The Times' Bill Carter broke the news on Monday night, citing "top staff members" who said that Westin would resign on Tuesday. But apparently Westin decided to go a little earlier, and sent the below email to staffers on Monday evening (you can also read ABC Television head Anne Sweeney's note).
The resignation appears to have been about—what else?—an inability to make the news division profitable (even though Good Morning America is bringing in "boatloads of money," thanks to Sam Champion's ultra-profitable drug-smuggling ring). ABC has already committed to firing as much as a quarter of its staff, but—among other things—lacks a cable news channel (a la NBC's MSNBC or Fox's Fox News) to help it cut costs (no, ABC Family is not news).
It's unclear who will replace Westin, who's staying until the end of the year, though Sweeney says the replacement will be announced "in the near future." Whoever it is will probably fire everyone who's left and just put on Sports Center in the old Nightline spot.
Paris Hilton Released From Prison After 3 Hours After Drug Bust
By Mof
Gimmers
Celebrities seem to get special treatment when it comes to the law don’t they? Mick Jagger was one of the first high profile busts, which prompted an outpouring in the media called ‘Who Breaks A Butterfly Upon A Wheel’.
When Lindsay Lohan went to prison, we responded with a similarly sensitive article called Lindsay Lohan Makes Going To Jail Look Like A Ruddy Lark.
And now, Paris Hilton and her boyfriend Cy Waits have had their collars felt by the long arm of the law. Alas, it was barely a grab at the scruff, rather a gentle tickle that lasted barely 3 hours.
The pair were in and out of jail in such a short time after being arrested for chewing gum/drug possession on August 27th.
The incredibly fair justice system of America (where they actually still kill people) have claimed that there is no special treatment going on here. The Las Vegas Police claim they’ve had no choice but to speed up the process… so not exactly special treatment, rather, A Bit Different Treatment.
Jim Dixon, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Deputy Chief, said:
“Yeah, she was treated differently so I don’t have a disruption of my process here at the county jail. When you bring in somebody like that, everybody comes over and tries to look at them. I’d have officers attempting to keep inmates away from her. I’d have disruptions.”Imagine that! A policeman being asked to deal with some disruptions. We shouldn’t mock really as we know full well that Vegas is a notoriously law-abiding place and the police probably aren’t used to doing anything other than scratching their rears and eating pastries covered in Pepto-Bismol.
Anyway, this isn’t over yet. Paris Hilton is set to appear before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Joe Bonaventure (what an exciting name!) on October 27 and, if all goes according to the normal trend of convicting, she’ll go to prison for four years.
Yeah. Right.

Letting the Housing Market Fall

I have been arguing for the government to step away from propping up the housing market for several years now.
It seems that economists are finally catching up with the idea. Today’s NYT has an article, titled Housing Woes Bring New Cry: Let Market Fall. Only I would argue its not new at all, and some os have been saying this for (literally) years.

Excerpt:
“Over the last 18 months, the administration has rolled out just about every program it could think of to prop up the ailing housing market, using tax credits, mortgage modification programs, low interest rates, government-backed loans and other assistance intended to keep values up and delinquent borrowers out of foreclosure. The goal was to stabilize the market until a resurgent economy created new households that demanded places to live. Its not a crash that is needed — it is merely allowing prices to revert to their historic levels.
As the economy again sputters and potential buyers flee — July housing sales sank 26 percent from July 2009 — there is a growing sense of exhaustion with government intervention. Some economists and analysts are now urging a dose of shock therapy that would greatly shift the benefits to future homeowners: Let the housing market crash.
When prices are lower, these experts argue, buyers will pour in, creating the elusive stability the government has spent billions upon billions trying to achieve.”

Housing Woes Bring New Cry: Let Market Fall
One Screw-up Away From Double Dip Recession
Nouriel Roubini is considered one of the greatest
minds in the world. In a September 2006 of
NY Mag he was asked whether the real estate ride was over, he said,
"Not only is it over, it’s going to be a nasty fall. This spring when
the economy looked as if it might recover warned that despite an
improved economy with rising stock markets, the crisis was not over and
new bubbles were on
the horizon:
- We are just at the next stage. This is where we move from a private to a public debt problem . . . We socialised part of the private losses by bailing out financial institutions and providing fiscal stimulus to avoid the great recession from turning into a depression. But rising public debt is never a free lunch, eventually you have to pay for it.
“The US has run out of bullets,” said Nouriel Roubini, professor at New York University, and one of a caste of luminaries with grim forecasts at the annual Ambrosetti conference on Lake Como.
“More quantitative easing (bond purchases) by the Federal Reserve is not going to make any difference. Treasury yields are already down to 2.5pc yet credit spreads are widening again. Monetary policy can boost liquidity but it can’t deal with solvency problems,” he told Europe’s policy elite.
Dr Roubini said the US growth rate was likely to fall below 1pc in the second half of the year, despite the biggest stimulus in history: a cut in interest rates from 5pc to zero, a budget deficit of 10pc of GDP, and $3 trillion to shore up the financial system. In other words, my cousin the bankruptcy attorney is going to have a very good year. Think of it as one of those old war movies when the plane starts running out of gas and slows down, eventually it goes so slow the plane stalls out and crashes
The anaemic pace compares with rates of 4pc-6pc at this stage of recovery in normal post-war recoveries.
“We have reached stall speed. Any shock at this point can tip you back into recession. With interbank spreads rising, you can get a vicious circle like 2008-2009,” he said, describing a self-feeding process as the real economy and the credit system hurt each other.
“There is a 40pc chance of double-dip recession in the US, and worse in Japan. Even if it is not technically a recession it will feel like it,” he added.Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson said the the US debt is getting us into trouble:
“The fiscal crisis seems to be out of control. The 'big crossover’ is approaching when the US spends more on debt service costs than on security, and historically that is the tipping point for any global power,” he said.According to Dr Roubini said that the housing market has already started contracting again.
Mr Ferguson said the “Chimerica” marriage of recent years is on the rocks. China is no longer willing to fund the US Treasury bond market, cutting its share of holdings from 13pc to 10pc of the total debt stock.
While China must find ways to recycle its trade surplus and hold down the yuan, it is doing this by stockpiling commodities, buying hard assets around the world, or rotating into Asian bonds.
In the US, the fiscal boost has faded, switching to tightening over coming months The lift from the inventory cycle is finished. Capex spending by companies has held up well, but this slowed sharply in July. Housing is already in a double dip. The last support for the US economy is consumption, barely growing at 1pc.Fasten your seat belts folks...from here on in things are going to get ugly.
“All we did was kick the can down the road and stole demand from the future,” he said.
Back to School By Joe Siano
Libertarians remain unpopular because we are always dumping
on someone’s favorite government program such as the universally popular home
mortgage deduction.
I must admit that I, too, am as happy as a kid on Christmas
when my accountant shows me how much tax money I saved by writing off my
interest. Nonetheless, I understand that
my mortgage payments would be lower if both the price of my home and my
interest rate were not government subsidized and thus allowed to find their real
market level. The deduction is just a
shell game that disguises cost and lets you think that government is on your
side.
But this is not about mortgages. This is about federal student loans.
Another popular program.
Who could be against that? Well…..
The first objection that I’d raise is, “by what
Constitutional authority is the federal government in the student loan business
at all”?
The Feds first got into the student loan business in the
late ‘50s and found Constitutional cover within the realm of national
defense. The original National Defense
Education Act (NDEA) was a reaction to the Sputnik scare. The nation wanted to ensure that we had
plenty of young scientists and engineers to combat the apparent technical
advantage that the Soviets were holding in weaponry.
In the interest of full disclosure I must confess that I am
also a beneficiary of this program. But
frankly, I am at a loss to see how my degree in Advertising and subsequent
career selling lipstick, candy bars, beer and whatnot helped to stave off the
Red Menace. Perhaps it was by stoking
the engines of capitalism, which can never be a bad thing.
However, the new student loan provision within the Obamacare
act makes no pretense of Constitutional legitimacy. This new law seeks to make higher education a
“right” just as we recently tried to make home ownership a “right”. And it will have the same disastrous effects.
Firstly, even before the new law, federal subsidies for
higher education fueled an inflationary trend in higher education that few, if
any industries, could match, except of course, housing prices, which was also
the by product of government intervention.
Secondly, up to 20% of current student loans are in
default. That means that we taxpayers
will foot the bill for deadbeats once again.
Thirdly, with an economy stuck in neutral and possibly
heading for another dip, we can reasonably anticipate increased default on loans
totaling over $85 billion annually (as of 2008).
Finally, with the government seeking to make college
education a “right”, we can also expect them to make more loans to unqualified
borrowers, just as they did with housing.
It’s time to get government out of education financing. Without subsidy, the price of a college
education will fall to its natural market level. Additionally, private lenders will make
student loans based upon sound business principles, not a political agenda.
Most importantly, taxpayers will be protected from adding
even more debt to our listing ship of state.
Guatemalan Illego Beano Blown Away By LA Police - A course the beanos protested......
Protest over fatal
shooting of an Illego Beano by LAPD turns violent
LOS ANGELES – A protest over the fatal police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant turned violent when some demonstrators threw bottles at officers, set trash cans on fire and refused to disperse.
Television news footage showed people tossing the bottles and plastic crates at officers in riot gear late Monday near MacArthur Park, a neighborhood with a large Central American population west of downtown.
Police declared the protest an unlawful assembly around 10 p.m. and ordered the dozens of protesters to disperse. The majority of the crowd cleared out, but a small number lingered and caused trouble, police spokesman Gregory Baek said.
Police made a couple of arrests, Baek said. He said police won't have a final tally until they complete the booking process for the suspects.
The protest began in the afternoon with demonstrators marching back and forth between a bustling shopping area where the shooting occurred and the Rampart police station three blocks away.
Police said three bicycle officers were patrolling the area Sunday when someone flagged them down and said a man was threatening passers-by with a knife.
When officers confronted the man, they ordered him to drop the knife but he refused, Lt. Andrew Neiman said.
"Instead, he came after the officers with a knife raised in the air, leading one of the officers to fire at the suspect," Neiman said.
Authorities have not released the man's name. However, friends identified him as Manuel Jamines, 37, a construction worker and father of three.
Protesters contend the man was not dangerous and say officers should have used a non-lethal weapon to subdue him.
"When you're trying to stop a suspect or stop a deadly action, the purpose is to stop the threat as quickly as possible," Neiman said.
MacArthur Park was the site of a May 1, 2007, clash, where police officers pummeled immigration rights marchers and reporters with batons and shot rubber bullets into the crowd. Dozens of protesters and journalists were injured as officers cleared the park.
The embarrassing incident cost the city more than $13 million in lawsuit settlements. Police were retrained on crowd control, forming skirmish lines, using batons in a crowd and using extraction teams to identify and arrest violent demonstrators.

be no re-vote and Vince Young will not be awarded the trophy. The
Heisman Trophy Trust does not want to re-vote the award and will not
give it to Young.
They plan to leave the award for that year blank. This is being reported by Yahoo Sports.
Do you think they are right to strip the award from Bush? It does seem to me that if you were not eligible to play; how can you be eligible to win? I think that if they are going to strip it from Bush, they should award it to Young. I don’t like the idea of the re-vote. Too much water has gone under the bridge. What do you think? As always you can respond here on the blog or to my email address at rbtjsmith@comcast.net.

Domino's Pizza Delivery Man Killed in Boston
A Domino's Pizza delivery
man was stabbed and killed in Boston after an apparent robbery setup.
Mariee Clena-Tunis, who lives next door to an abandoned house at 742
Hyde Park Avenue, was approached by a heavy-set woman at her home around
10:30 p.m. The woman asked to borrow Clena-Tunis' phone to make a
call.
Clena-Tunis gave her the phone and was shocked to learn that it was used to order a pizza to the abandoned house next door. "[They] tried to put me in trouble, but God be with me anyway," Mariee Clena-Tunis said to the Boston Herald. "Don't tell me it was for pizza ... She told me it was to make a call."
The female suspect was seen fleeing the area with two male suspects in a green 1995 Suburu. The Domino's Pizza delivery man killed was in his 50s, and was attacked some time after midnight, Boston Police Commissioner Ed David said. He was dead when paramedics arrived on the scene. The police believe the motive was robbery. Robbery is the theft or larceny of property through physical force or fear. When a knife, gun or other weapon is used, or if the victim suffers serious injury, the robbery charged may be raised to "armed" or "aggravated robbery.
The Suburu was discovered the
next morning in a parking lot behind St. Adalberts parish in Hyde Park
after a citizen who had heard about the incident saw it and called
police. Commissioner David said that the police found quite a lot of
evidence in the car.Clena-Tunis gave her the phone and was shocked to learn that it was used to order a pizza to the abandoned house next door. Domino's Pizza has had a tough week, reports the Boston Herald. Earlier in the week another Domino's Pizza delivery man was killed by a man fleeing the police who ran a red light and crashed into his car. Domino's said that it is "shocked and saddened" by the death of the delivery driver.

Little Rock Nine Member Jefferson Thomas Dies
By Karen Ocamb
Jefferson Thomas, died Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. He was 68.
I owe Thomas and his fellow Little Rock Nine heroes a tremendous debt of gratitude. Because of them, I learned about racism before I learned about falling in love.
On Sept. 25, 1957, Thomas, Trickey Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed Wair, Terrence Roberts, Melba Patillo Beals and Ernest Green courageously agreed to become the first Black students to attend Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas. The historic Brown v Board of Education decision was issued by the US Supreme Court three years earlier ordering the desegregation of America’s schools – but states and counties were refusing to enforce the law until President Eisenhower stepped in and ordered the 101st Airborne to escort the students to school.
I never met the Little Rock Nine – but I felt I knew them in my heart. In 1955, my father was a deputy base commander stationed at Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan. For some reason, I was bussed to kindergarten off-base. Every time the bus left the base, we were met by outraged Japanese college students waving signs and yelling “Yankee Go Home!’ Sometimes a protester would get to the bus – just pure hatred in his eyes – and slam against the window, screaming. Not only was I afraid – but I didn’t understand why they hated me so much. What did I do? Re San and Susie San explained that they didn’t hate me – they hated Americans for occupying their country. It took me a while to understand the distinction. We wound up getting an escort of MPs.
When my father was transferred back to the States in 1957, I remember seeing news reports about the Little Rock Nine. I was glued to our black and white Admiral TV watching these kids who were older than me doing something important. Thousands of miles away, safe at Mitchell AFB in New York, I was heartsick at what they were going through. I knew that fear. I knew what it felt like to have people hate you for no reason at all. And this was so much bigger. My father tried to explain racism – but it was hard to understand since we lived on integrated Air Force bases where the only thing that seemed to matter was rank.
The Little Rock Nine changed my world – I became an advocate for equal rights and social justice. And while I never met Jefferson Thomas – I did become friends in the late 1970s with one of my Japanese protesters, the chief NYC-based correspondent for the Tokyo Broadcasting System when I worked at CBS News Syndication. We drank and sang karaoke at a piano bar together – laughing at how different times were now from that pain of hatred.
Rest in Peace, Jefferson Thomas – and thank you. Here’s a short piece produced by Marquette University on the Little Rock Nine:
Burning The Koran
If you haven't heard, there is a 50-member church called the Dove
World Outreach Center from Gainesville, Fla. headed by pastor Terry
Jones that has decided for some reason to hold a Koran burning party on
9/11.
My opinion a couple months ago when this first came out and now remain the same. I do not hold to book burning and it seems like a very stupid way to piss off the enemy. I mean these are the same people who killed 17 people and injured countless others over a FAKE Koran "toilet flushing" story. This is going to make them apoplectic.
That being said, they have EVERY RIGHT to do so. The fact that General Petraeus has come out and made a comment on this bothers me. Why is the US Military getting involved in a civil issue? It's not a hate crime, it's freedom of speech. Petraeus may be right, but this is unusual at best.
AND, Pastor Jones has a point,"We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam. We will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats." Here we are 9 years after 9/11 and we are cowering in the shadow of Islam. If all it takes is 50 whack jobs at some church burning some books to piss them off then we have a bigger problem than 50 whack jobs burning books. Much bigger.

Muslims nervously await 9/11 amid row over mosque plan
Muslims in the US are nervous about
celebrating Eid this year as the festival coincides with the 9/11
anniversary that too amid a controversy over plans to build a mosque
near ground zero.
A worried US commander in
Afghanistan has criticised a Florida church’s plan to mark the
anniversary of Sep 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and
Washington by burning copies of the Quran, and warned that the
demonstration “could cause significant problems” for American troops
overseas.
“It could endanger troops and it could
endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan,” Gen. David Petraeus said
in a statement issued Monday.
The Dove World Outreach Centre in
Gainesville, Florida, insists the Quran burning event is “neither an
act of love nor of hate”, but a warning against what it calls the
threats posed by Islam.
With about 120,000 US and NATO-led
troops still battling Al Qaeda and its allies in the Islamic
fundamentalist Taliban movement, Petraeus warned that burning Qurans
“is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause
significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we
are engaged with the Islamic community”.
Several religious organisations have
joined with US Muslim groups to oppose the Quran-burning. The National
Association of Evangelicals is urging the Florida church to cancel the
event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two
religions.
Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu
leaders in Gainesville have organised a “Gathering for Peace,
Understanding and Hope” the night before the scheduled Quran burning.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Hooper, national
communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations
(CAIR), told CNN: “Most Muslim communities will be reluctant to have
something that’s perceived to be celebratory on 9/11 even though we’re
not celebrating 9/11.”
“There’s a whole cottage industry of
Muslim bashers now who would seize on that,” he said. “Unfortunately,
these are the times we live in.”
With many American Muslims already
feeling intense scrutiny over the controversy surrounding a proposed
Islamic centre and mosque near New York’s ground zero, many mosques and
Islamic groups are dramatically altering their usual plans for Eid
ul-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, CNN said.
The Islamic Centre of Murfreesboro,
Tennessee, which made national headlines after the site of its future
mosque was vandalised last month, has decided against scheduling any
festivities for Saturday.
“It’s a sad day for us as Americans and
it’s a sad day for us a nation and we don’t feel it would be right to
celebrate on the anniversary of 9/11,” Abdou Kattih, vice president of
the centre’s board of directors, was cited as saying by CNN.
In lieu of celebrations, many mosques
are planning open houses next weekend in the hope of strengthening ties
to their communities, according to Naeem Baig, vice president for
public affairs at the Islamic Circle of North America.
A coalition of influential Muslim groups
has announced a national day of service for Sep11, aimed largely at
burnishing the image of American Muslims at a sensitive time.
