The Internet “Kill Switch”

By Adam Bitely
It is entirely possible for the government to turn off the Internet. Don’t believe it? Just look at what happened in Egypt.

Last week after protests began against the dictatorial government of Egypt, the Egyptian government under the order of the President Mubarak ordered that the Internet be turned off. And that is exactly what happened.

This same thing can happen anywhere on Earth. If Egypt can do it, then every other country could have the same ability, especially a superpower like the United States.

Just last year, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) sponsored legislation that would have given the President the authority to shutdown the Internet in the event of a “cyber security emergency”. So far, this legislation has not been brought to the Senate floor, but is expected to be later this year.
But just because this legislation has not passed does not mean that the government cannot shut off the Internet currently.

Shock Vid: Planned Parenthood Advises Pimp

Yesterday I saw a number of headlines screaming that Planned Parenthood has reported the Live Action group, which has been going undercover into abortion clinics across the country and exposing illegalities, to the Justice Department. They were asking for some kind of investigation.

Because I don't trust the media at all I figured that this was just about Planned Parenthod trying to get in front of the story, spinning it. I figured there was more to the story. And there is. A lot more. And none of it looks good for Planned Parenthood.

According to Live Action:
A Planned Parenthood manager in New Jersey coaches a man and a woman posing as sex traffickers how to to secure secret abortions, STD testing, and contraception for their female underage sex slaves, and make their whole operation “look as legit as possible” in an undercover video released this morning.
Pro-lifers and pro-choicers should watch this video and wonder why this organization receives hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer funds. This needs to stop. Defund Planned Parenthood now!

US ambassador to China resigns

US ambassador to China resigns

WASHINGTON , February 01, 2011:US Ambassador to China Jon M Huntsman Jr has resigned, amid reports that he is likely to challenge Barack Obama in the 2012 Presidential polls. Huntsman, 50, hand delivered his resignation letter to the White House on Tuesday in which he said that he wants to return to his home state Utah by May.

He will step down from his post in April. Earlier in the day, outgoing White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Huntsman, a Republican, had hinted that he would leave his present assignment and that a search to find a replacement for him had already begun.

“Ambassador Huntsman has told a number told several people inside this building that he plans to leave in the first part of during the first part of this year,” Gibbs said. “When the (US) President picked him in 2009, it was because we believed, and continue to believe, he brings a broad range of experience to an extremely important ambassadorial post with one of our most important relationships in the world. The President continues to believe that,” he said.

The Washington Post reported that Huntsman has resigned in possible preparation for a presidential bid against his boss, Obama, in the 2012 polls. Huntsman resigned from his governorship of Utah in 2009 after Obama named him as ambassador to China.

“The President and I think the American people, expect that somebody that holds the post of ambassador from the United States to China would dedicate their full energy and time to that position. And we believe that Ambassador Huntsman believes that as well,” Gibbs said in response to a question.

In an interview to Newsweek in December last year, Huntsman had said: “You know, I’m really focused on what we’re doing in our current position… But we won’t do this forever, and I think we may have one final run left in our bones.”

Huntsman, who is fluent in Mandarin, has played a crucial role in shaping the China policy of the Obama Administration.

Democrats Choose Charlotte, North Carolina for 2012 Presidential Convention

On February 1, the Democratic National Committee announced that the party’s 2012 presidential convention will be in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is the first time that any party, major or minor, has ever held its presidential convention in North Carolina. Charlotte is the state’s largest city.

North Carolina is the nation’s ninth most populous state, and yet no presidential candidate in the general election has ever been a North Carolinian. It is also likely that no vice-presidential nominee has ever been a North Carolinian. This is peculiar, because North Carolina is one of the 13 original states.

The Democratic convention will be held the week of September 3-7, 2012. The Republican Party had already announced that it will hold its 2012 convention in Tampa; and the Libertarian Party had already announced that it will hold its convention in Las Vegas. Tampa and Las Vegas, like Charlotte, have never before been the location of a presidential convention.

Morning Brief: Egypt protests swell as army rejects use of force

Posted By David Kenner
Top story: Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians flooded the streets of Cairo on Tuesday in a new attempt to end the three decade reign of President Hosni Mubarak. They were encouraged by two political developments: A statement released by the army promising to not use force against the protesters, and a brief, televised statement by Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman announcing his intention to open a dialogue with the opposition forces.

The military continued its efforts to maintain order during the Tuesday protests. Soldiers set up checkpoints outside Tahrir Square, where the protesters gathered, to pat down people for hidden weapons before they entered.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders, buoyed by the massive protests, remained firm with regards to the movement's central demands. Potential presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei told al-Arabiya television that Mubarak had to first leave Egypt before the opposition would open a dialogue with the regime. "I hope to see Egypt peaceful and that's going to require as a first step the departure of President Mubarak," he said.

There were also signs of high-level diplomacy meant to resolve the week-long revolt in Egypt. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Mubarak in a televised address to "satisfy the people's desire for change." Meanwhile, the State Department dispatched Frank Wisner, a former U.S. ambassador to Cairo, to meet with Mubarak and other top official in his regime.

Egypt's economy at a standstill: As foreign tourists left the country and international businesses closed factories, Egypt's economic paralysis presents another challenge to Mubarak's regime.
