On February 1, the Democratic National Committee announced that the party’s 2012 presidential convention will be in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is the first time that any party, major or minor, has ever held its presidential convention in North Carolina. Charlotte is the state’s largest city.
North Carolina is the nation’s ninth most populous state, and yet no presidential candidate in the general election has ever been a North Carolinian. It is also likely that no vice-presidential nominee has ever been a North Carolinian. This is peculiar, because North Carolina is one of the 13 original states.
The Democratic convention will be held the week of September 3-7, 2012. The Republican Party had already announced that it will hold its 2012 convention in Tampa; and the Libertarian Party had already announced that it will hold its convention in Las Vegas. Tampa and Las Vegas, like Charlotte, have never before been the location of a presidential convention.
